Parks and Recreation
The Dallas County Parks and Open Spaces commission operates preserves that include Grapevine Springs Preserve, Elm Fork Preserve, Spring Creek Preserve, Joppa Preserve and Fish Creek Forest Preserve, to name just a few. All parks come with grills, picnic areas and playgrounds. Many of the preserves are ADA accessible.

Over 200,000 residents have access to a variety of recreational opportunities in and around Irving. There are boat tours on Lake Ray Hubbard and bus tours of Dallas. Golf, horseback riding, skating, tennis, swimming, fishing, boating and water-skiing are just a few of the sports and recreation options available to Irving residents.

Local Attractions
Irving is an official Texas Main Street City and part of the Texas Main Street Program, which helps cities revitalize their historic areas. Traders Village is a well-known weekend flea market that also hosts events such as professional rodeos, a chili cook-off, an antique auto show, and an Indian Pow Wow. Irving Mall has over 150 stores and there are hundreds of shops, service providers and restaurants around the city.

The Metroplex is a shopping mecca. Grapevine Mills – at 1.5 million square feet – is the first regional mega-mall serving Texas and the southwest. The Galleria has many one of-a-kind stores. Highland Park Village and The Shops at Willow Bend are two sophisticated shopping areas with many upscale and unique shops. Other shopping malls include Stonebriar Centre, Valley View Center, Collin Creek Mall, North Hills Mall, and the Parks at Arlington. There are a number of outlet malls within the Metroplex, including Fort Worth Outlet Square, Denton Factory Stores, and Terrell Tanger Outlets.

Museums also abound in the Metroplex. The American Museum of Miniature Arts, International Museum of Cultures, Frontiers of Flight Museum, and the Dallas Arts Museum are located in Dallas. The Kimbell Art Museum, the Amon Carter Museum, and the Sir Richardson Collection of Western Art are all located in Fort Worth. The John Fitzgerald Kennedy Memorial, at Main and Market in Dallas, is a place of meditation. The Sixth Floor Museum, located in the former Texas School Book Depository in Dallas, is a tribute to the life of JFK with exhibits and a memorial. Sundance Square in downtown Fort Worth is a 14-block area of restored and rebuilt late 19th century buildings. The area has restaurants, theaters, museums and nightclubs.

The Fort Worth Water Gardens is a beautifully landscaped five-acre park with waterfalls, gardens, and a meditation pool. The Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Gardens has over 60 acres of flower and garden displays. Fair Park, home of the State Fair of Texas since 1886, houses the Smirnoff Music Centre, Cotton Bowl, Science Place, Dallas Aquarium, Omnimax Theater, Hall of State, Civic Garden Center, the Museum of Natural History, Age of Steam Railroad Exhibit, Music Hall, the Coliseum, and an amusement park. The Dallas World Aquarium and Zoological Garden has a walk-through tunnel to view stingrays, sharks, and sea turtles along with hundreds of animal exhibits, including a penguin colony. Six Flags Over Texas in Arlington offers additional entertainment and fun.
